A Letter to Gen X

By: Andy Fry, Coach, Renogize Professional Coaching

Dear Gen X,

Can we talk? We have something to share that may make you feel uncomfortable.

It is time to delegate. We know. We know. Hear us out, though. We know you are great at what you do. We know you can do everything, that you don’t need help from anyone. You are resilient, resourceful, and the epitome of independent. Don’t take this the wrong way, though. It’s just that we feel that we (collectively) could all be doing more.

We know you moved up the ranks to be where you are because of how great you are at execution, but you aren’t on the front lines anymore. We are. Your capacity is great, and we have all benefited from it. Think about being able to apply that capacity to focus on the things only you can do:

  • Developing a vision and a strategy that we can set goals toward achieving

  • Anticipating upcoming challenges

  • Forecasting how we need to adapt to meet the needs of our industry in the future

We get it. You don’t want to delegate because you don’t want us to go through what you did — problem solving with very limited guidance. Sure, it may hurt a little bit while we are learning and working our way through things that you figured out on your own a long time ago. Give us the opportunity to do what you did…to fail forward. Coach us through our struggles, don’t bulldoze a smooth path for us to walk on. A stubbed toe now and then can be a good thing.

We want to do more, and we need to do more for the ultimate health and longevity of our organization. Don’t protect us. Lead us.

Sincerely,

Your Devoted Team
